Businesses abetting vandalism by providing a market for harvested scrap metal will face stiff legal action.
The stern warning was issued by Scrap Metal Council chairperson Francis Mugo following a circulating online video showing individuals vandalizing road rails along the Thika Superhighway within the Ngara area in Nairobi.
The Scrap Metal Council is a State Corporation established through the Scrap Metal Act No.1 of 2015 and mandated to regulate the scrap metal industry in the country.
Mugo said though arrests had been made, law enforcement officers were actively pursuing additional suspects. The council is urging licenced dealers to ensure they operate within the legal framework by identifying their source of material to avoid abetting vandalism of critical national infrastructure.
In January 2022, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta imposed an indefinite ban on scrap metal trade to curb the increasing vandalism of key installations. In May 2024, the Scrap Metal Council suspended the renewal and issuance of export licenses following a resurgence of wanton vandalism of critical national infrastructure.
